Half Hewn Tree & Animal Skull

So who would cut down half of a tree in the middle of the woods? And what animal met it's fate here? I have found that the woods in Allegan are littered with bones, and it's not uncommon to stumble upon the restless remains of animals in the woods or nearby fields.
