Fledgling Cardinal

This fledgling cardinal appeared on a bird bath near my house in late August.  It certainly was a late hatchling - cardinals typically raise their last brood no later than July.  With only two months to go before the first frosts, this bird was facing severe challenges.

The usual artifact just behind the bird - which looks like it's face in profile - appears to be just a coincidental arrangement of light, as the same image appears in other exposures where the bird is positioned differently.
