Three Lights

| Sunset at the Saint Joseph light houses. For a few weeks during the
spring and fall, the sun sets between the two lights.
Unfortunately, the late winter in Michigan is not a time of year when
the sky is clear - and many days can go by without sunshine, let alone
sunsets. On this particular day in the first week of March I left home
with the sun shining brightly in a clear sky. The drive to St. Joe takes
about 55 minutes, but I left almost two hours before the sunset time, to be
sure to have ample time to arrive before the sunset.
The pier was foggy as I pulled up, and at the shore I could see a bank of distant clouds off to the west. I suddenly found myself hurrying to set up, as the sun quickly transformed from a clear light to a dull orange orb. Ten minutes later the sun sank into the murk, a full half hour before the sunset time. Although I waited for a while, the sun did not return. Time and timing is one of the most intriguing aspects of photography. I was lucky to have caught the ten good minutes of the day at St. Joe that evening, and catching those critical moments is always the biggest challenge. |
