Pinery Cemetery
June, 2001
| When we followed the signs that read "Indian Cemetery" wasn't sure what to expect. My imagination wavered between an archeological site, with a few depressions in the ground, to a crass tourist location. To my surprise the Pinery Cemetery was a viable, active location, and graves centuries old sat next to recent plots, covered with photos, mementos, pinwheels, and other decorations. Once there, I learned that this location has been a burial ground for American Indians for centuries upon centuries, and still serves in that capacity to this day. I tried to take a somewhat abstract approach to this subject, out of deference to people (living and dead) who utilize it. |
