I saw my first Karner blues of the season on Friday, 7/7. Last week I ran into Naturalist from the Kalamazoo Nature Center who was doing bird counts in the Allegan Forest. He told me that a late spring frost had damaged the lupine and also hurt the Karner population this year. It's quite a contrast from last year, where some areas were just swarming with Karner Blue's and they popped up in some fields where I had never seen them before. I ran into this subject in a field that is usually full of them, and all told saw only 4 or five possible Karner's, guessing at their identification by the way they flew.
