When I visited the Allegan Forest on Tuesday, it was an overcast day with flat light. When I returned there this morning the tree was basking in a ray of direct sunlight - though filtered as the last bit of morning fog burned away. So here is a more luminous, less subdued take on the scene (click on the image for a larger file):

Waves of Paradise is a field recording by Eric Hinchman. Recorded on the Lake Superior, near Paradise, Michigan, this peaceful, meditative recording captures the sounds of waves lapping the shore. I’ve taken many a vacation in little housekeeping cabins just north of Paradise, and was happy to license my photo, Canadian Windmills for the cover image.
Listening to this CD brings me back to those peaceful summer evenings - enjoying the sound of the waves, maybe sitting by a bonfire, and looking up to see both the natural beauty of the milky way in the clear northern sky and the man made light show of the Prince Wind Energy Farm feeding the Canadian power grid on the other side of the straight.
Below is my photo of the wind farm and Whitefish Bay, taken in evening twilight (click on it for a larger version.)
More about the recording, Waves of Paradise can be found here and also here.

Pam and I spent the last week touring some of the rural historical sites in Maryland. It was a fun trip and I have a few photos to sort through. Here is a snapshot taken yesterday of the Dahlgren chapel, located just off the Appalachian Trail in western MD. Click on the image for a larger file.

I’m happy to announce that two of my photos are in the 14th annual Maryland Federation of Art’s American Landscapes Exhibit! This is the 4th American Landscapes I’m been privileged to participate in, the last being in 2008. Here are the works that I have in this year’s show:
The exhibit will be in the MFA Circle Gallery from August 15 - September 14, 2014. The Circle Gallery is located at 18 State Circle, Annapolis, Maryland.
Spring 2014 is advancing ever so slowly… Here it is, late May, and there are still many trees just starting to push out leaves. At long last, a few days of warm temperatures have finally brought out some spring dragonflies.
Dot-tailed Whitefaces (Leucorrhinia intacta) are usually the first to appear around here, and this season is no exception. Here are a few from the Allegan Forest (click on the images for larger files):
A Frosted Whiteface (Leucorrhinia frigida):

These Clubtail Dragonflies (Gomphidae) are usually abundant in May - I have never gotten a positive identification on them. Today I only say this one - hopefully more are on the way:

Lastly - an unidentified Bluet Damselfly:
All images were made with a Pentax K-3, SMC A* 200mm macro lens and AF360FGZ flash. Come to think of it… this was my first excursion into insect photography since purchasing the K-3 last November. I think it passes muster!
I am currently exhibiting several prints in the gallery space at the Transformations Spirituality Center in Nazareth, Michigan. Here are a few highlights of the exhibit (click on the images for a larger file):
Hidey Hole Chipmunk
Forest Floor Still Life
Wild Columbine
Halloween Pennant
Snow Crystal
If you are around or near Kalamazoo, stop by and see the images - they will be up till late March, 2014.
